Canadian Superstars Celebrate Hockey Gold Medals

Date: March 30, 2001
Host: Michael Landsberg of TSN
Guests: Chris Jericho, Edge, Christian and Val Venis

-The host asks what it means to be Canadian and working in an American industry and whether it affects how they do. All the wrestlers agree that usually being Canadian doesn't have any affect on their position in the roster unless they are engaged in a patriotic angle like Bret Hart or Lance Storm. Edge says if you're good they cheer. Val Venis adds that the fans don't care where you are from - they just want to be entertained.

-Michael Landsberg asks why the Canadian superstars are among the most talented in the WWF but they are not the biggest superstars. Why? Edge answers that it depends on time in the company in that they are all young and will have time to achieve it. Jericho mentions that it isn't anything like Vince McMahon having a fear of Canadian wrestlers.

-Edge says that fans realize that if someone sees a good match then it has to do with both opponents in the match - both the good guy and bad guy.

-Michael Landsberg asks if anyone feels their character hasn't been marketted to its full potential. Edge says yeah, their Brood storyline because it was really getting going but was stopped abruptly. Jericho says sometimes they show up and question why or who they are wrestling but that's all a part of the business and it's a part of getting elevated.

-As the show was taped, WCW had not been sold to WWF. Landsberg asks what the effect it will be. Edge says that it isn't good for one company to be a monolopy and have competition. He says that it's not good for the guys down there and it's uncomfortable for them because if anything happens, they don't have anywhere to go. Jericho echoes those sentiments. Val Venis says that competition made the WWF improve their product, and overall made both shows good. Venis says with one show gone, people may have a tendency to get lazy. Christian says that it keeps the product fresh if there are two rivals.

-Landsberg says that with WCW sold, the leverage is gone. Venis says that it was great working in Japan but Edge cuts in and says that it's hard for American and Canadian guys to get into Japan. Edge says that he's afraid fans will get bored. Edge thinks it won't happen but the fear is there. Jericho says that without lack of competition, no one is nipping at your heels, and putting out a good show may not matter and they start arguing a little bit because Edge says WCW hasn't been competitive for a long time, and thus hasn't been nipping at their heels. Jericho says yes, but the possibility is there and it drove the WWF to great heights.

-Landsberg says that it seems WCW has gone back to the earlier storylines from the 80s and 90s. Jericho says that when things were hot, it didn't take a genius to know that it was going to get worse. He mentions a time when a young Val Venis came to him for a tryout in WCW and Jericho says "get out of here and into the WWF". Venis nods affirmative.

-Landsberg asks if the company seems more corporate since the WWF went public. Edge says not really, you have to answer to the same people. He is a fan of wrestling, not entertainment and he has disagreements with the writers over it.

-Landsberg says that Val Venis just got married this morning and asks if he would do anything different if he's single vs. married. Venis says no, he will always work his hardest since it's business.

-Landsberg talks about the XFL and says that it hasn't been very successful and asks if it has any effect on the WWF. Edge said he feared it would and there are XFL stuff on their product but the fans don't pay to see that. Jericho asks if the WWF and XFL keep losing money, would the wrestlers have to end up paying for it - that thought is in every wrestlers' mind. Venis says it will take time to make a serious fanbase and he thinks it will do well, but it may be two-three years down the road. Christian says people probably tuned in to see NFL-quality type players but that wasn't going to happen. He agrees that it will take time. Jericho says that it may have been the advertising which seemed to imply that the XFL was "better" than NFL, causing NFL fans to turn away. Jericho says people may not check out the XFL just cause the WWF wrestlers will be on it.

-Landsberg asks how they protect themselves in a one-business sport that is not unionized. Venis says there is no absolute security in this world. Venis says all they can do is make their characters stronger and that will be his personal security. They joke around about birds because Venis used an example of a bird digging up worms and not being "secure" either. Jericho says he doesn't care if there is a union or not but he thinks that in the future, someone will step in and say there has to be one. Christian says that NBC also is involved in the XFL so any losses are split between the two.

-They talk about the talent pool coming from WCW and how there is only so much TV time. Val asks how a union would fix that - a union is only for the lazy. They joke some more about the bird analogy.

-We come back from commercial and Landsberg says during the break they had a debate over the union. Venis says a union is a joke, Jericho says it protects the workers. Jericho argues that every sports and entertainment field has a union but the WWF doesn't. Edge laughs and says if Jericho gets fired next week, we all know why.

-Landsberg plugs the upcoming appearance by Kurt Angle.

-They talk about Wrestlemania a bit and talk about the upcoming tour in Western Canada. They all say that they visit Canada a lot, Val actually still lives in Ontario.

-Overall, the show was pretty good. Jericho and Edge seem really outgoing, Christian was pretty quiet and Val Venis comes across as a very rational and educated man. Good stuff.
